La Crosse Technology WS-7017U-IT Review by Brian R. Wanamaker (Allegany, NY USA)

I bought a Model WS-7017U-IT Thermometer/Weather Station on 10/6/2009 from Amazon.com and I love it... When it works, that is!

It looks great. The setup was a snap. I'm using two remote temperature sensors with it. One is on my covered porch and one is in the crawl space under my house. The temperature readings on the base and from the two remotes appear to be quite accurate. I had them all sitting together on my desk for awhile and all the temps were within a degree of each other, (the read-out is in tenths of a degree). The radio range of the remotes is good, too. For a test, I took one way out to the corner of my back yard and it stayed in touch with the base. Also the radio-controlled time setting function worked well and synchronized with Fort Collins within an hour or so. Even the weather forecast indicator (barometer?) on the base is reasonably accurate.

It locked up the first time on 11/1/2009, at 2:00 AM on Sunday morning at the moment Daylight Savings Time ended for the year. I woke up in the morning and the weather station's clock said 2:00 AM. I tried pushing every button but the base didn't respond. Every indicator on the display was visible, but it was locked at 2:00 AM and it showed the temps from that time. The only remedy I could find in the user manual was to remove the batteries from all units and replace them in proper sequence, preferably with brand new batteries.

I brought in my two remote temp sensors (crawling under my house to retrieve the one in the crawl space), and re-set all the units. I put in fresh AA batteries just for good measure, even though the existing batteries were only a month old. I decided to give the thing another chance before seeking technical support. My thinking was, if it locks up only once (or twice) a year when the daylight time changes, I can live with it.

About six weeks later it happened again - at 2:00 AM on Sunday, Dec.13, 2009. I repeated the re-set drill, cursing as I crawled on frozen ground under my house to retrieve the remote sensor. New AA batteries again, just to be safe.

Fine! until January 17th. Sunday, 2:00 AM. Another lock-up!!

I'm done crawling and cursing. I need a new unit. I left the batteries in this time, and intend to send the unit in for warranty repair/replacement like that, so LaCrosse support can see how the display locked up.

The next step is to see how long it takes to get it repaired. I emailed LaCrosse Support two days ago. I received an automated email confirmation immediately, but so far no reply from a human being. So, the jury is still out. I'll reserve final judgment on this product until after I get a properly working one and have used it for a few months.

La Crosse Technology WS-7017U-IT Review by J. Reyna

This weather station looks great and provides accurate indoor/outdoor temperatures. Make sure to read the directions when syncing the outdoor sensor up for the first time, but after it is done it is flawless. The forecast does not seem to be very accurate, but neither are our local weathermen...

La Crosse Technology WS-7017U-IT Review by Juniorverse1

I purchased one of these at a deep discount at a local store, and it works pretty well aside from one obnoxious issue: if you have it set to automatically sync the time to the atomic clock, the unit sometimes freezes at midnight, and the only way to unfreeze it is to remove the batteries from it and from the outdoor wireless sensors to "reboot" the system. Read on...

When you power up the system for the first time (or after it freezes up), you have to follow a strict procedure: First, make sure all batteries are removed for 60 seconds. Then insert the batteries into the first temperature sensor, then within 30 seconds, insert the batteries into the base unit. If you have additional sensors which I do, as soon as the signal is detected, you have to insert the batteries into the additional sensors within 10 seconds of the previous one. If there are any transmission problems, you have to take out all of the batteries and start over.

You can see how annoying this is to have to do when the unit freezes up on you. I live only an hour or so away from the atomic clock in Boulder that this unit uses to sync the time with, so I'm not sure what the problem is. I found that the only way to avoid the periodic freeze-up of the unit is to turn OFF the setting to automatically sync the time. Others on the web have the same issue, and tech support did not offer me any solutions that worked until I found the solution on my own. I wish the unit would be able to just skip around the issue and continue to work as normal... if it can't find the atomic clock signal for some reason, just skip the sync and continue to operate... no reason to completely freeze up!

Other than that, the unit performs well. It comes with one remote temperature sensor, but you can add up to 3 total (I have two of them). The unit looks nice on my wall... the combination black and stainless steel-look goes well with all of the appliances in my kitchen. Overall, not bad for the price, if you can deal with not having the auto-sync with the atomic clock.

Please see my review of the outdoor sensor that comes with this unit here.
